Forests
Mountain forests that are plentiful in broad leaf deciduous trees like maple, ash and birch are located in central and northern Honshu. Forests of evergreen trees are common in the areas of Kyushu and Shikoku. These varieties of forests are the home to many animals that are only found in Japan such as the native primate, the Japanese macaque.
Wildlife
There are many animals that are unique to the islands of Japan. Many endangered species of animals live in Japan as well.

Pollution
Due to high amounts of industrialization, pollution is a significant problem posing threats to the ecosystem and to the people who live there. Pollution became a significant problem in Japan as early as the 1950s when there was an excessive increase in manufacturing plants. During this period of time, the air, soil and water was greatly affected. Many people who lived close to the areas experienced health problems such as respiratory illnesses and even mercury poisoning. There have been many efforts made by the Japanese government to cut back on pollution and help preserve their environment.
